Fraunhofer MEVIS is participating in the “AI x Open Lab – in Summer of AI,” a program in Bremen focused on artificial intelligence, taking place in summer 2026 alongside the international conference IJCAI-ECAI. With interactive stations for young adults and a public dialogue event, the institute demonstrates how AI opens up new possibilities in healthcare and invites experts from science and medicine, as well as interested members of the public, to discuss these developments using concrete examples.
From Data to Diagnosis: How AI Creates Tangible Value in Medicine

How is artificial intelligence changing medicine? What does AI mean for everyday clinical practice? And how do patients benefit concretely from these developments?
Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Medicine MEVIS cordially invites you to engage in conversation with researchers about current developments in AI in medicine. The focus is on concrete applications, current research questions, and exchange on how technological innovations can create real added value in patient care.
Experts from science and medicine will discuss with you, based on concrete examples, how AI opens up new possibilities in healthcare:
Radiologists face the task of evaluating large volumes of image data from CT and MRI examinations and comparing them with prior scans. This process is time-consuming and carries the risk that important findings may be overlooked. AI tools help make this complex evaluation more efficient and reliable. One example is the software tool OncoChange, which supports the analysis and comparison of extensive imaging datasets and thereby enables better assessment of cancer treatment progression.
How is an AI tool actually created? Who provides the data, who validates the results, and why is a large language model alone not sufficient? The CuraMate research platform shows how precise annotation of tumors and organs can be supported, thereby creating the foundation for high-quality clinical and scientific data use.
Multicenter studies play a central role in medical research. They combine data from different hospitals collected under varying technical conditions. This allows new applications to be tested more realistically and their reliability in everyday clinical practice to be better assessed. This collaboration is particularly crucial for rare diseases, as it is the only way to generate sufficiently large and meaningful datasets. The RACOON research network demonstrates how hospitals can jointly build such data foundations for the development and validation of AI methods.
There have also been remarkable advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Compared to X-ray and CT, MRI provides a patient-friendly, radiation-free diagnostic method and enables not only static images but also functional information about organs and tissues. At the same time, it is often time- and cost-intensive, and for some patients burdensome due to long examination times and loud noise. New AI-supported methods help reduce examination times and improve medical image quality.
Interested participants are invited to contribute their questions and discuss AI in medicine with experts and other attendees.
AI-Supported Analysis of Medical Images: From Learning AI to Research Tool

At two stations, trainees and students can experience how they first build their own AI for tissue analysis in a web-based environment for training simple AI models—and then use a real medical research tool to work with actual imaging data. This makes the path from a learning AI to a practice-oriented research tool tangible and shows how AI-supported image analysis can be applied in medicine.
