ISMRM Workshop on Fluids, Flows, and Clearance in the Brain: What Can We Image and How Should It Be Interpreted?

The International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) is a multi-disciplinary nonprofit association that promotes innovation, development, and application of magnetic resonance techniques in medicine and biology worldwide.

This workshop will review state-of-the-art MRI techniques for measuring neurofluids (blood and cerebrospinal fluid dynamics in the brain) and how to interpret and apply these images in clinical disorders. Topics include new methods in phase-contrast MRI, functional MRI, ASL, diffusion, and motion-sensitive imaging, along with approaches for rigorous validation and interpretation. Sessions will also cover CSF physiology across spatial scales and its role in waste clearance and lymphatic systems. Clinical applications discussed include traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer’s disease, sleep disorders, pediatrics, hydrocephalus, and aging. The workshop features a hands-on session on analyzing MRI data for neurofluid measurement and an introduction to open-source data and tools. It provides technical insight, practical skills, and clinical context for imaging and understanding CSF and brain waste-clearance systems.
