Marshmallow Laser Feast and Fraunhofer MEVIS at York Mediale 2020

October 22, 2020

Marshmallow Laser Feast, one of the leading virtual reality creators in recent years, and Fraunhofer MEVIS as scientific partner cooperate on the installation The Tides Within Us, the initial part of the Human Nature exhibit at York Mediale 2020.

A triptych of installations under the banner of Human Nature, jointly curated by York Mediale and York Museums Trust, come together to form the centerpiece of York Mediale 2020 starting on October 21st and continuing into the new year until January 24. The first of the three is The Tides Within Us, a new commission from one of the world’s leading immersive art collectives, Marshmallow Laser Feast. The installation explores the journey of oxygen from lungs to the heart and body, it is part of a series of installations echoing the ecosystem within nature.

The Tides Within Us is an ongoing exploration into the world beyond the limits of our senses. The project investigates the flow of oxygen through the cardiovascular system, painting a picture of a human body as a fluid event, more like a whirlpool than a static object. This flow questions the boundary of where this living body begins and where it ends. Our human skin is often viewed as a boundary between self and other. By peering beneath this sensorial surface we discover branching beings, ecosystems neatly packaged to move. We aim to challenge the notion of boundary between our bodies and our environment. When our skin becomes transparent, our true nature is revealed.

Prof. Dr. Matthias Guenther, Deputy Institute Director of Fraunhofer MEVIS and Professor for Magnetic Resonance Physics and Spectroscopy at the University of Bremen: “The cooperation with exceptional artists such as Marshmallow Laser Feast makes research results accessible for a broader public. It opens up new meaningful ways for STEM-scientists to interact with society, and vice-versa.”
