Fraunhofer MEVIS once again participated in Girls’ Day on April 23 with an extensive program on the topic of Digital Medicine. The aim was to arouse the interest of around 20 participating schoolgirls from the 7th grade onwards in scientific content, to convey this in a practical way and to show them perspectives within the STEM subjects.
At the Bremen and Lübeck sites, researchers from Fraunhofer MEVIS explained how medical images are created and how they find their way into the computer. Practical examples were used to explore how the human eye perceives colors and contrasts and how this can be influenced. The students learned interactively how images are displayed on the computer and how they can be analyzed with regard to certain diseases.
In Bremen, the program was rounded off with a visit to MEVIS’ own magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner. Here, images of various everyday objects were taken with the students and later examined on the computer.
At both sites, Fraunhofer MEVIS female researchers as well as colleagues from IT and administration in Bremen talked about their work and careers and answer the students’ questions.
