Fraunhofer MEVIS has several scientific contributions to the 42nd Annual Meeting of the European Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Biology (ESMRMB) from September 30 to October 3, 2026, in Girona, Spain.

Fraunhofer MEVIS will participate with numerous scientific presentations at the 29th International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer-Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) from September 27 to October 1, 2026, in Strasbourg, France. The annual MICCAI conference serves as a forum for the world’s leading biomedical researchers, engineers, and clinicians from a broad spectrum of disciplines in the fields of medical imaging and computer-assisted intervention.

Following its successful launch in the 2025/26 school year, the “Digital Medicine” specialization, jointly developed by Oberschule am Waller Ring and the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Medicine MEVIS, will continue and be further developed in the 2026/27 school year. The specialization is aimed at students interested in the medicine of the future.

The International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI), one of the world's leading conferences in artificial intelligence, will take place from August 15 to 21, 2026, in Bremen, Germany, jointly with the European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI). Experts from the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Medicine MEVIS look forward to welcoming you at our booth in the Congress Centrum Bremen from August 18 to 21 and discussing our latest research in trustworthy and application-oriented artificial intelligence for medical imaging and digital healthcare.

A recent study led by Max de Grauw from the team of Alessa Hering at Radboud University Medical Center investigated the impact of AI support developed by Fraunhofer MEVIS on RECIST assessment in follow-up CT scans of 212 cancer patients. Across 23 readers from 11 institutions, the AI assistance reduced assessment time per patient by about one third compared with manual reading and increased inter-reader agreement of RECIST outcomes by 7.7%.

Fraunhofer MEVIS is participating in the “AI x Open Lab – in Summer of AI,” a program in Bremen focused on artificial intelligence, taking place in summer 2026 alongside the international conference IJCAI-ECAI. With interactive stations for young adults and a public dialogue event, the institute demonstrates how AI opens up new possibilities in healthcare and invites experts from science and medicine, as well as interested members of the public, to discuss these developments together using concrete examples.

On June 29, 2026, the Fraunhofer MEVIS Advisory Board convened in Bremen for its 18th meeting, chaired by Prof. Hans Maier.

As a research and technology transfer institute for digital medicine, Fraunhofer MEVIS—together with the Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology (BIPS) and the U Bremen Research Alliance (UBRA)—calls for a change of course in its new position paper “AI4Prevention”: away from late, reactive treatment and toward early, precise prevention that spares patients unnecessary or unlikely-to-succeed interventions.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Medicine MEVIS is again well represented at this year’s European Congress on Digital Pathology (ECDP 2026), taking place 17–20 June 2026 in Graz, Austria.

Matthias Günther, Deputy Institute Director of Fraunhofer MEVIS, was designated Fellow of the Society at this year’s meeting of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) held in Cape Town, South Africa from May 9 to 14.

The MS Wissenschaft will launch its tour in Berlin on May 7, 2026, as part of the Science Year 2026 – “Medicine of the Future.” Fraunhofer MEVIS is also on board, presenting, within a joint exhibit by Fraunhofer Health, how artificial intelligence is used in tumour follow up control.

Fraunhofer MEVIS once again participated in Girls’ Day on April 23 with an extensive program on the topic of Digital Medicine. The aim was to arouse the interest of around 20 participating schoolgirls from the 7th grade onwards in scientific content, to convey this in a practical way and to show them perspectives within the STEM subjects.

This year's European Congress of Radiology (ECR), which will take place in Vienna from March 4 to 8, has the inspiring motto “Rays of Knowledge.” The meeting will highlight progressive education, multidisciplinary collaboration, and technological advancement, illuminating the path toward patient-centred, knowledge-driven imaging practice. Fraunhofer MEVIS is actively involved in shaping the ECR 2026 with a variety of contributions.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Medicine MEVIS will showcase the latest developments in AI-supported digital medicine at the SPIE Medical Imaging Conference 2026, taking place from February 15 to 19 in Vancouver, Canada. This year, Fraunhofer MEVIS will be represented at the renowned conference with two poster presentations and a co-chaired live demonstration workshop, in which two of the live demos will showcase work by Fraunhofer MEVIS.

Researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Medicine MEVIS will present the latest technologies aimed at optimizing clinical workflows and improving patient care at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA 2025), held from November 30 to December 4 in Chicago.

A new exploratory study by the “Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft e.V.” shows what structural conditions need to be established to bring science and society into closer collaboration throughout the research process. It highlights what is already working well in Germany and where there is potential for a research culture that is both socially impactful and democratically grounded.

Fraunhofer MEVIS welcomes Gregory Alliss to the STEAM Imaging VI residency programme: “Resonant Connections through Design and Data.” The glass artist and engineer will be a guest at Fraunhofer, where he will focus his creative work on glass, the world of MR scanners, data, and design.

The European Society of Radiology (ESR) in cooperation with the European Institute for Biomedical Imaging Research (EIBIR) invites applications for the Pixel Pandemonium at the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) 2026. ECR 2026 will be taking place in Vienna, Austria, from March 4 to 8, 2026.

To mark International Breast Health Awareness Month, which takes place every October (see www.breastcancer.org), female scientists from Fraunhofer MEVIS invited female students from Oberschule am Waller Ring and the BBSG vocational high school for health, along with their female friends & family members to the institute on Monday to discuss breast health.

On 4 November 2025, 5:00 pm, the House of Science in Bremen will open the exhibition ‘Research yesterday, today, tomorrow—Insights into science in the state of Bremen’. To mark the 20th anniversary of City of Science and House of Science, the institution's sponsors will be presenting current examples of their research.

Fraunhofer MEVIS successfully contributed to the 28th International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) held from September 23 to 27, 2025 in Daejeon, Republic of Korea.

This year, the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Medicine MEVIS turns 30 – and marked the occasion on September 3 and 4 with several events. At a festive ceremony in Bremen’s Town Hall, representatives from politics, science, and industry honored the institute’s role as pioneer of digital medicine and driving force for the healthcare of tomorrow. At an international symposium, renowned experts offered insights into the future of medicine. Afterwards, the institute opened its doors to the public: during an Open House, Fraunhofer MEVIS researchers showcased their current projects through numerous, partly interactive demos.

The event is aimed at female practitioners from all disciplines with an interest in medicine, computer science, and mathematics. The fully booked course, taking place from August 26 to September 4, gives participants hands-on insights into key areas of digital medicine through interactive learning units and live demonstrations, led by Fraunhofer MEVIS scientists.

When the new school year 2025/26 begins on 14 August 2025, the Oberschule am Waller Ring secondary school in Bremen will offer a program that is unique in Germany: an upper secondary school specialization in digital medicine. It was developed in close cooperation between the school’s upper secondary school and the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Medicine MEVIS. The aim is to get young people excited about the key technologies of modern medicine at an early age and to show them the role that mathematics, computer science, biology, and psychology play in this field.

On July 16, 2025, we had the pleasure of welcoming Prof. Holger Hanselka, President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, to Fraunhofer MEVIS. He was accompanied by Dr. Patrick Hoyer, Research Coordinator at Fraunhofer. Following a warm welcome by Institute Director Prof. Horst Hahn, the visit continued with a varied tour through our institute.

Fraunhofer MEVIS hosted a three-day workshop as part of the EU-funded TACTIX project, welcoming more than 30 participants for an intensive program focused on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology. The event brought together students and researchers from Boğaziçi University (Türkiye) and Fraunhofer MEVIS (Germany), with the project also drawing on the combined expertise in teaching and research of all partners, including Amsterdam University Medical Centre (Netherlands).

Over the next few weeks, four senior researchers from Boğaziçi University, Istanbul, Türkiye, will visit Fraunhofer MEVIS. Together with the MR-team they will work on a wide range of topics from MR-monitored High-Intensity Focussed Ultrasound (HIFU) and Electroencephalogram (EEG) to MR-sequence programming using gammaSTAR, the in-house development framework for MRI pulse sequences.
