The 22nd European Congress on Digital Pathology (ECDP 2026), taking place 17–20 June 2026 in Graz, Austria, will bring together experts from pathology, computer science, molecular biology, clinical medicine, and industry to advance collaboration in digital and computational pathology. The congress will focus on integrating digital pathology into routine diagnostics, highlighting whole slide imaging, AI-driven tools, molecular profiling, standardized data infrastructures, and clinical workflow integration.

Tissue Navigator

Tissue Navigator offers a navigation system that enables pathologists to perform digital histology-based diagnosis in clinical practice more efficiently and reliably.
It allows pathologists to instantly navigate to the same location across differently stained tissue sections and visualizing the registered stains simultaneously.
First studies reveal that Tissue Navigator shortens diagnosis time by over one minute per case in breast carcinoma.

The navigation is based on a state-of-the-art image registration algorithm. Numerical optimization methods ensure robustness against a wide range of stains and image qualities. Tissue Navigator seamlessly integrates into existing image viewer and reporting software within the digital pathology workflow. Thanks to the live-deformation technology, no additional storage space is required for deformed slides.

Image Foundation Models for Digital Biomarkers

The authors thank the National Cancer Institute for access to NCI's data collected by the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial.

Our experts have developed and implemented a supervised training approach that achieves results while using only 1% of the computational resources and energy. This approach makes training foundation models significantly more cost- and energy-efficient.

Foundation models are AI-based models that are pre-trained with a variety of training data to learn general patterns or features. In histopathology, foundation models are the basis for new image-based biomarkers, e.g. for predicting patient risk or therapy response, which will help to reduce costs in personalized medicine.

At ECDP 2025, we show how foundation models can be used to train AI on clinical outcome data and how these models can generate new insights into image-based biomarkers.
